In a world where so many people are working quietly to make a difference, I believe it’s important to pause and celebrate them. Inspired by You is a space where I highlight individuals whose dedication, passion, and impact remind me why inspiration is so powerful. Today, I’m honored to recognize someone whose work truly embodies the spirit of inspiring souls.

Jonathan Barnett is a school counselor in Alabama who is committed to guiding minds, strengthening hearts, and shaping futures for the students he serves.

Jonathan graduated from the University of North Alabama, where I had the pleasure of being on campus with him during our time as students. I’ll spare the full stories for now, but let’s just say—those who know, know—a time was definitely had. During his time at UNA, Jonathan was actively involved in the Student Government Association and quickly became known as someone who valued leadership, service, and community.

Life, however, has not been without its challenges.

Losing a parent is one of life’s hardest experiences. I know this personally, as my father passed away in July 2020 after being absent for much of my life. Jonathan lost his mother in November 2020—the woman who raised him and helped shape the man he is today. While grief looks different for everyone, I never tried to compare my experience to his. What I did see, however, was his resilience. Despite such a tremendous loss, Jonathan continued to push forward with strength, grace, and purpose.

I truly believe that the love and strength his mother poured into him continues to guide him today. And if there’s one thing I know for certain, it’s this: she would be incredibly proud of the man he has become.

And I am too.

Jonathan is also a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., which recently celebrated 119 years of service on December 4. Through his graduate chapter, he serves selflessly—helping organize initiatives such as Alpha Gents, the MLK Unity Breakfast and the Alabama District Leadership Institute hosted at UNA.

He’s a brother to many, a friend to even more, but most importantly, a servant to all who need him.

Professionally, Jonathan continues to grow and invest in his craft. One of his recent accomplishments includes attending the 59th Annual Alabama Counseling Association Conference in Birmingham, where counselors from across the state gather to share knowledge and strengthen their ability to support students.

Outside of his professional work, Jonathan also enjoys exploring the world. In fact, he once took a single-day trip to New York City and somehow managed to fit in an impressive list of experiences, including:

  • Eating at Ellen’s Stardust Diner
  • Seeing the Broadway show Death Becomes Her, featuring Michelle Williams
  • Visiting Times Square
  • Walking through Central Park
  • Riding the New York City subway
  • And of course, enjoying authentic New York pizza

When he’s not traveling or supporting students, Jonathan also lends his creativity to the performing arts. He works with Theatre Huntsville, where his passion for theater continues to shine. Most recently, he was announced as a member of the creative team for “1776,” a musical where democracy is debated, tempers flare, and nothing is settled quietly.

The production will run June 12–28 at the Von Braun Center Playhouse in Huntsville, Alabama, and tickets are currently available.

Jonathan’s love for theater has also placed him on stage in productions such as “Something Rotten!” and A Christmas Carol,” showcasing yet another dimension of his talent and dedication to the arts.

Jonathan Barnett reminds us that inspiration often lives in the everyday work of serving others, pursuing passions, and continuing to move forward even when life presents its toughest moments.

And for that, Jonathan — I’m inspired by you.

– Keep being amazing!
