it’s just a title…

So I was inspired to by Michelle Obama’s statement in support of Dr. Jill Biden:

And the part that stuck was when she stated that regardless of the title, we’re forced to prove ourselves all over again. I personally have never cared about my job title or the office space. I’ve just always desired to be in the lane God created for me to thrive in. And professionally, I’ve been blessed. And even though some assume that I have it made, I too have to prove (without trying to prove) with my actions that I’m capable of doing the work for a select few.

I recognize that titles do matter to most and that’s cool. Just don’t let a title pull you into a space that was not created for you. Don’t let a title become the end goal for you. And never let someone make you feel unworthy because of a title that you do or don’t have.

Be like Dr. Biden and be proud of all that you have accomplished.

Some would say it’s just a title, but what I want “some” to understand is that it’s a title that took hard work + somewhere along the line, sacrifices had to be made. So it might be just a title to you but it’s still a title that most of us want acknowledged and that we will mention it every chance that we get.

Whatever your title or role is, Embrace your journey and inspire others along the way.

I started out working in a cubicle space with 3 other women. Talk about no privacy. It was tough maneuvering in a professional space where nobody looked like me or can’t understand why I can’t afford to go out for luncheon most days. I had to make do with what I had. I had to shop smart so I could still look the part. I had to stay over so I could learn the software and the proper terminology for the field. I had to show up with a mask on because honestly I didn’t want to not be viewed as a hardworking professional. I had to shift gears mentally so that I didn’t waste time feeling sorry for myself. I would tell myself on the more difficult days:

YOU PRAYED FOR THIS. THERE’S BETTER DAYS AHEAD. KEEP YOUR FOCUS.

I think at the time Jeremiah 29:11 was the only scripture I knew by heart and fully accepted that it applied to me and my life goals.

“For I know the plans I have for you”, declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Jeremiah 29:11

Crazy because at the time, not always having funds to eat sounded like that plan was not working in my favor. But when I tell you that I truly know what it means to trust God with your little and watch him multiply/and or provide more than enough for you.

I can’t tell you how many times the person in front of me took care of my order. I lost count of how many times there was a glitch with the card reader even though it worked right before I pulled up. And my co-workers were the absolute sweetest. I never told a soul how tough it was for me and there was 3-4 women who blessed me when they couldn’t have known that I was in need of one specifically on the day in question unless they received a nudge from the good Lord himself. Those “God-winks” gave me the strength I needed to push through and reminded me that I have purpose (even with little to no extra funds. )

I think now I take more pride in my accomplishments because I know where I come from and I remember where I started.

I’m humbled by the fact that God has a sense of humor and has given me some fancy title and an office with a window so big I never have to to turn my office lights on because of the amount of natural lighting I receive.

But even this space that I’m currently in as a professional is temporary and I’m not attached to it.

I’m attached to the mission…

Of being the light.

And I pray that I always remember that the mission is not confined to a designated space.

You can be successful in more than one lane with more than one role.

just don’t attach yourself to a title, attach yourself to a mission. That way when the time comes for you to leave said role/company, you leave…

successful.

empowered.

with pride.

Be like Dr. Jill Biden and let your resume speak for itself. And when the opportunity presents itself, be like Michelle Obama and let the naysayers know what’s up, respectfully.
