living on a budget + doing it well

I don’t talk much about money. As a kid, I probably did assume that money grew on trees.

As an adult, I recognize that money grows when you decrease your spending. Something I could definitely do more of.

So I’m just going to share what is currently working for me.

I get paid monthly, so just keep that in mind as you’re reading.

tip #1:

Pay everything upfront regardless of when the due date is.

The beauty in doing so is that I don’t give off the illusion to myself that there’s more money to play with than there actually is.

For example, my cell phone bill is due on the 15th of each month: But I still pay it on the first, sometimes earlier.

It’s a blessing to be able to do this now. I can remember praying that there would come a time where I’d pay everything on payday and there would be plenty left. I used to live check to check and the struggle was so real. Which leads me to my next point…

tip #2:

Always find a way to bless others.

Whether it be paying for a person’s meal by taking them to their/your fave restaurant… Buying snacks at the gas station for a homeless person… Cash-apping someone with the note: “lunch/dinner on me today”…

In the past when I was broke broke, people always looked out for me unknowingly. Like I didn’t tell them I didn’t have it but it was like God sent them my way because I didn’t. And those that knew never made me feel embarrassed about simply not having extra. I knew that one day I’d be able to do the same. I don’t post about it either. I just do it. Nothing wrong with posting about it if your motives are pure. I just do it because I can remember specific encounters where someone covered an expense/meal for me with no hesitation and it reminds me that we are blessed to simply bless others.

tip #3:

If you have a credit card (or two), be smart and use it wisely.

I only have one. Praise God. I’ll have to write a blog on how I paid off multiple credit cards when I was making little money. The one I have, I only use for emergencies only or on expenses that I have the money to make a payment in full within the next 14 days. I pay off last month’s balance at the end of the month. It’s a system that has worked for me because I’m less likely to swipe my way into the card being maxed out. I’d encourage you to at least pay more than the minimum.

tip #4:

Create more than one bank account.

The legal kind. lol One bank that you don’t have access to pull up on will help you save more. Set it up to where your check is distributed funds to each account. Also, make sure you have a savings account at one of them. Not having an atm card to my savings is another blessing in disguise. I’ll transfer money there and leave less in my checking to play with. Yes, when it comes to money… I have to play mind games on myself. The crazy things that work for me…

tip #5:

Live within your means.

I don’t care about people thinking I got this/that. I literally manage a blog telling people what I do and don’t have. What I’m good at and what I fail at. How I win sometimes and how I tend to lose more than I win. I choose peace though. Peace for me is living within my means. I’m not rich but I’m blessed and highly favored. And that’s something worth sharing.

Be inspired to become a better steward over that which God has given you. Even if it seems little or viewed as not enough in your eyes. I remember those days. My account being in the negative. Me running out of gas often as a college recruiter. Eviction notice warnings and a time or two where my lights were cut off. I remember.

I actually hope I never forget. Those days made me…

And now these days are showing me how when God promotes you, God also grants you with the capability/responsibility to help others level up.

2021 is near, but you can start now. Set a goal for yourself. A financial goal of mine is to not buy any more clothes until 2021. I haven’t been shopping since July. Hopefully, I make it through the holidays just fine. I ignored all the Black Friday emails and I hope I can do the same for the next 21 days. I’m learning that I really can do anything that I put my mind to. And that is a powerful realization for me.

Watch me use that to my advantage…
