I’ve been in 5 different positions at 3 different universities. made several mistakes throughout my career journey.
I’m not even sure I’ve ever really been qualified for any position but I do know the ONE who qualifies those that have been called.
I figured why not share what my mistakes have taught me over the years.
DO NOT BE LIKE ME. BE BETTER THAN ME...
- Always keep track of your accomplishments [big or small] on the job to help build your resume.
- Take on as many roles as you you can handle as a professional so that you can set yourself up for that promotion/raise.
- NEVER assume that a verbal offer holds any weight.
- Read every line of the contract and ask questions on any part that serves up confusion.
- Leading from the back still builds character.
- Each day is another opportunity for you to show up + be better than you were yesterday.
- Your presence brings a bright light to dark places.
- Prove to yourself that you’re more than capable of doing the extra work sent your way.
- Don’t knock yourself out of receiving God’s best because you don’t see yourself as “qualified”.
- If God placed you there, then know that there’s purpose in every challenge that you face.
You live and you learn. Here’s some of my most memorable career mistakes.
I accepted my first job and had no clue what I’d be making initially. I was just so excited about finally having a job offer.
Big Mistake.
I accepted a verbal offer that actually mentioned the wrong salary.
Another Big Mistake.
I accepted the start date for a job in a new city with no place to stay.
Yea, Another Big Mistake.
I accepted being mistreated from a boss or two.
Definitely not the case now, but still a Big Mistake.
I accepted whatever was being offered because I believed that God would provide.
(God does provide but you don’t have to settle.)
I’m well aware of what I bring to the table now, but this too was another Big Mistake.
I could probably list so many more. But I think you get the point that I’m trying to make.
Mistakes happen.
You could actually crown me queen of mistakes.
I’ll take it.
I’ve learned so much over the years though about myself and this career that I’m still growing in.
Honestly, it’s my mistakes that have helped mold me into the professional that I am today.
