I was never a big fan of walking in a straight line as a kid. I now think I was simply trying to maintain my personal space. You learn the importance of straight lines in Pre-K and if you’re lucky, you may get to be the leader of that line in elementary school. You’re not always going to be in a position to lead as an adult, but there’s always an opportunity to follow.
You follow people on social media.
You follow traffic signs.
You follow the latest trends.
You follow instructions.
You follow the chain of command.
You follow whatever it is that attracts your interest.
Sometimes you lose sight of who you are by following what’s intended for your neighbor. A follow can lead to the unexpected, new beginnings, or lifelong partnerships… What happens though when what you’ve been following causes you to fall out of line, out of place:
I used to follow who liked my post on social media and who didn’t, I used to follow my exes on social media to keep up with if their new girlfriend was prettier than me, I used to follow what was being said about me negatively, I used to follow those voices in my head that would try to remind me that I wasn’t good enough… If you’ve been following along, you get the point I’m trying to make.
I decided to follow Christ wholeheartedly last year, and that also required me to stop following a few things. Following Christ doesn’t mean that you start living the perfect life, it simply means you’ve started a process. As the end of the year comes to a close, I’m reminded that it is by the grace of God that I’m still here making progress. Here’s a recap of my year:
January 2016: Served 1st & Last Eviction Notice. Not the best way to start off the new year, but I wasn’t worried though because I just knew that a miracle was on the way with my name on it and that God didn’t need 5 days to provide me with an extra $75 for rent. #MySoleProvider
February 2016: Attended the “A Time With the King” Women’s Conference and won a gas card, which I was in desperate need of at the time. #UnexpectedBlessings
March 2016: Attended the Saved in the City Serenity Retreat and was simply in awe that God sent the overflow for me to pay for this trip in full. #IncreaseHitBankAccount
April 2016: Surprise Beach Trip… with an amazing family who I adore and was so grateful for the invite. #VacationPaidFor
May 2016: At this point of the year, majority of my credit cards were paid off in full and closed. Bye Avant, Belk, PayPal, Amazon, American Eagle. #LenderNotTheBorrower
June 2016: Scholarship Judge for Miss Alabama. National American Miss Judge. #BirthdayGiftsFromAbove
July 2016: First Trip to New Orleans, Louisiana. #TravelAdventures
August 2016: I spent the day in Atlanta, GA with recording gospel artist Briana Babineaux. #ShowOutGod
September, October, November 2016: Work, Work, Work, Work. Blessed with a job that suits me perfectly, so I’m not complaining. #GodCreatedItJustForMe
December 2016: My younger sister will be graduating December 17 and my prayer has been that she graduate with a job offer in hand. I’m so proud of her and can’t wait for her to reveal where God is sending her to educate the babies!!! #IKnowGodHearsMyPrayers
See one decision in what I chose to follow changed my perspective, opened up doors of opportunities, and allowed me to travel on a budget. Choose to follow what will help you in the time of need, what will challenge you to push yourself, and what will always come through for you in the end.
Blessed is she who believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her. Luke 1:45
